At Nexus Strategy & Implementation, we believe mobility is opportunity. That’s why we’re proud to partner with the Gary Public Transportation Corporation (GPTC) to help spread the word about National Transit Equity Day and GPTC’s commitment to equitable, accessible public transportation across Northwest Indiana.

On Wednesday, February 4, 2026, GPTC will provide free transit service to all riders in observance of National Transit Equity Day and Rosa Parks’ 110th birthday. All fixed routes and transfers, along with GPTC’s Access 219 paratransit service, will be included in the free-fare promotion. Riders who need Access 219 paratransit service must sign up in advance; residents interested in becoming paratransit riders can contact the GPTC ADA Coordinator at 219-884-6100 ext. 106.
Honoring Rosa Parks and the Meaning of Transit Equity
Created in 2018, National Transit Equity Day commemorates the life and work of Rosa Parks and reinforces a powerful truth: all communities deserve safe, reliable, affordable, and equitable access to public transportation.

Born on February 4, 1913, Rosa Parks became a civil rights icon when she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama city bus in 1955. Her courageous act of resistance helped spark the Civil Rights Movement and reshaped the nation’s understanding of justice and equality. Parks remained an advocate for civil rights and education throughout her life, until her passing in 2005 at the age of 92.
Community Partnerships Make Free Transit Possible
GPTC’s free-fare day is made possible through sponsorship from Fuel Outdoor Media, which has served as GPTC’s advertising vendor since 2019. Fuel Outdoor Media specializes in out-of-home advertising, including indoor, outdoor, and transit advertising for local businesses, and their support helps remove cost barriers for riders on this important day.

Advancing Equitable Mobility Across Northwest Indiana
Transportation access is a cornerstone of economic opportunity, health, and community connection. Through our partnership with GPTC, Nexus Strategy & Implementation is supporting efforts that ensure mobility options are not only available, but accessible, inclusive, and sustainable, especially for communities that have historically faced barriers to transportation.

In addition to supporting initiatives like Transit Equity Day, Nexus provides comprehensive, equity-centered support across mobility projects, including bike share and multimodal transportation programs. Our work includes:
Strategic marketing to build awareness, encourage ridership, and clearly communicate program benefits
Logistics planning to support efficient deployment, operations, and system growth
Maintenance planning to promote safety, reliability, and long-term asset management
Coordination across partners and municipalities to ensure seamless implementation and regional alignment
At Nexus Strategy & Implementation, we believe that when transportation works for everyone, communities thrive. We’re honored to support GPTC’s efforts to celebrate Transit Equity Day and to continue advancing equitable mobility throughout Northwest Indiana.
